SMBC Aviation Capital Delivers First Airbus A321neo LR to Icelandair: A Game-Changer for Fleet Expansion
Icelandair has received its first Airbus A321neo LR from SMBC Aviation Capital. This is a big moment for the airline, as it’s the first Airbus aircraft in its 87-year history. The plane was delivered at the Airbus facility in Hamburg, Germany. It’s part of a deal for five aircraft, with two more arriving by summer 2025 and the last two in 2026.
This new plane, powered by IAE PW1133G-JM engines, will help Icelandair expand its routes between Europe and North America. The A321neo LR is more fuel-efficient and can fly longer distances, making it perfect for Icelandair’s goals.
Bogi Nils Bogason, CEO of Icelandair, said this aircraft brings new opportunities for the airline and for Iceland as a tourist destination. He also thanked SMBC Aviation Capital for their strong partnership.
Barry Flannery, Chief Commercial Officer at SMBC Aviation Capital, called this delivery an important milestone. He thanked the teams at Icelandair and Airbus for their hard work and said he looks forward to a successful partnership with Icelandair.
SMBC Aviation Capital is one of the world’s largest aircraft leasing companies, based in Dublin, Ireland. They focus on new, efficient aircraft like the A321neo LR, which are better for the environment and cheaper to operate.
